An
example for a random walk is the Galton board, which is used to demonstrate binomial distribution
to students. On this board, balls are dropped from the top and they repeatedly
bounce either left or right in a random way as they hit pins stuck in the
board. (Ein Beispiel für Zufallswanderungen liefert das Galton-Brett, mit dem Schulkindern die Binomialverteilung
veranschaulicht wird. In diesem Bild werden Erbsen über ein Brett voll Nägeln (oben) gerollt. An
jedem Nagel muss sich eine Erbse entscheiden, ob sie links oder rechts vom
Nagel vorbeirollt.)

Beim
Zusammenstoß eines Moleküls (zwei blaue Kugeln) mit einem Atom (einzelne rote
Kugel) kann ein Atom ausgetauscht werden. So entsteht ein neues Molekül (rote
plus blaue Kugel) und ein Atom (einzelne blaue Kugel) wird freigesetzt. Bei dem
Innsbrucker Experiment findet dieser Prozess bei Temperaturen von weniger als
einem Millionstel Grad über dem absoluten Nullpunkt statt. Der Austausch ist
völlig durch die Quantennatur der Materie bestimmt und kann durch Anlegen eines
Magnetfeldes präzise gesteuert werden.
