BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 BEGIN:VEVENT SUMMARY:Adiabatic control for efficient single photon absorption in free space and for quantum gates in optical lattices DESCRIPTION:A technique is presented for achieving deterministic generation and absorption of single photon wave packets by single atoms in free space. It exploits basic features of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. These procedures can be used as basic building blocks for engineering quantum communication protocols compatible with free space links relevant for satellite-based quantum communication. Furthermore, a protocol for implementing a two qubit gate in an optical lattice is presented. The interaction between the neighbouring qubits is mediated by a large ensemble of atoms in the superfluid phase. Adiabatic control is used in order to tailor the local interaction between the single atoms carrying the qubits and the additional atoms in the superfluid phase. Using such a large ensemble of atoms significantly increases the strength of the non-local interaction between neighbouring lattice sites leading to faster gate operations.
