Magnetic imaging of spin waves

Magnetometry based on electron spins associated with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond has emerged as a new platform for probing magnetism. NV magnetometry provides quantitative access to evanescent magnetic stray fields at material surfaces, making it well suited for studying spin-wave excitations in thin-film magnets. In this talk, I will introduce NV magnetometry and describe its use to study localized spin-wave resonances, thermal spin-wave distributions, and spin-wave chemical potentials. Furthermore, I will present recent experiments in which we use ensembles of NV spins to image coherent spin-wave transport and interference. These techniques open up new possibilities for imaging spin-wave transport in atomically-thin spin systems.
