In this talk, we present our progress towards the understanding of quantum simulation platforms of a finite temperature topological condensed matter system with chiral edge states. We discuss a setup of neutral atoms in a 1d optical lattice with a second, artificial dimension introduced by using the internal states of the atoms, thus creating a 2d lattice. With suitable laser coupling of states in the artificial dimension a synthetic magnetic field is produced, and the resulting chiral edge states can be observed even at finite temperature.
