Abstract: The joint action of particle-particle interactions and gauge fields is well known to give rise to exotic quantum phases of matter, whose most famous example is fractional quantum Hall effect. I will show that, in a cold earth-alkaline-like Fermi gas loaded into an optical lattice, the atom-atom contact repulsion and a particular synthetic gauge field give rise to a novel hierarchy of incompressible quantum phases, characterized by both charge and spin order, and to strongly-interacting helical liquids. I will also discuss the effect on the system of a parabolic trapping potential and of finite temperature. Reference: S. Barbarino, L. Taddia, D. Rossini, L. Mazza and R. Fazio, arXiv:1504.00164
